18th & Rhode Island Garden

Since 2008 Our Permaculture demonstration garden in Potrero Hill, San Francisco has been growing organic food and donating it to those who need it the most.

The Harvest

Nearly every plant in the garden produces food—currently around 1,000 pounds of nutritious, organic produce each year.

Most is donated to the Free Farm Stand and given away every Sunday at noon at Parque Niños Unidos (corner of 23rd St and Treat Ave). If you’d like to help with the harvest, see our volunteer page.

Visitors to the garden are welcome to take what they and their families will eat. (We encourage you to leave enough to share with others.)

2022 Grant Challenge

$6,000 will be matched!

A generous, anonymous donor has repeated their matching challenge for 2022: If we raise $6,000 by the end of the year, it will be matched dollar for dollar!

Your financial contribution can go twice as far toward helping the garden. Please take advantage of this wonderful matching grant opportunity, and donate in any amount you’re comfortable giving today.

Using this form here will allow you to make a one-time or recurring donation and you can cancel at any time. You receive an invoice each time payment is processed.

The San Francisco Permaculture Guild is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. Donations may be tax deductible. Upon donation, you will receive an email with relevant tax information.

2022 Action Plan

Starting in Fall 2022, we are beginning a new phase of action at the garden.

  • replace dead and/or unproductive fruit trees
  • update irrigation for better coverage
  • raise money to increase irrigation budget
  • update and repair retaining walls and bed edging
  • add more organic matter: mulches and compost
  • grow more produce in all of the bed
Your generous donations and volunteer efforts help make all of this possible.

Volunteer

We will be hosting regular workdays and we will post those here soon.

You can also join our email group that we use to coordinate volunteer work.

Visit the Garden

One of San Francisco’s best kept secrets, the 18th & Rhode Island Permaculture Garden is a regenerative food forest demonstration site created by the San Francisco Permaculture Guild.

The garden is located on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill at (surprise) the corner of 18th St and Rhode Island St.

It is open year round, sunrise to sunset, to everyone who would like to visit, harvest or volunteer.
